SERJobs’ Success Story - Durriyyah
Durriyyah never imagined herself behind the wheel of a commercial truck. Like many individuals seeking a better future, she was searching for a stable career path, one that could provide not just a paycheck, but long-term opportunity and independence. That search led her to SERJobs’ Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program, where she took a bold step toward transforming her life.
Through the program, Durriyyah gained the technical skills, hands-on training, and industry-recognized endorsements needed to enter the trucking industry. More than that, she built the confidence to pursue a career in a field where women are still underrepresented. Upon completing her training, she secured her first position with a logistics company she connected with at a SERJobs graduation job fair, an early success that marked the beginning of her journey.
Durriyyah understood that experience would be key to unlocking greater opportunities. With determination and a clear goal in mind, she committed herself to gaining that experience while continuing to explore new possibilities. Using industry tools and job platforms, she actively sought out positions that would allow her to grow professionally and expand her horizons.
Her persistence paid off. After building her experience, Durriyyah was recruited by a national transportation company that recognized her potential. They invested in her success, covering onboarding costs and flying her to Atlanta for an intensive, all-expenses-paid training. Today, she proudly works in a role that offers not only financial stability, but a clear path for advancement.
What began as an unfamiliar and unexpected career choice has become a source of pride and purpose. Durriyyah has not only entered the trucking industry; she is thriving in it. As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, she is breaking barriers and redefining what is possible.

SERJobs’ Success Story - Mariana
Mariana, a hardworking single mother of twin boys, always dreamed of providing her children with a stable home in a community with good schools. However, relocating to another state after a divorce was challenging due to her starting over from ground zero.
One day, she connected with SERJobs after hearing about the organization from a friend. She spoke with career coach Tania, who after assessing her situation, helped her enroll in SERs Banking/Customer Service Training. After Mariana completed her training, she obtained a job in customer support at United Airlines.
Mariana accomplished her goal of obtaining employment. Her next goal was homeownership. She was worried about her credit score, the down payment, and whether she could afford a mortgage. But she refused to give up. Mariana connected with Roberto Howard with the Houston Financial Empowerment Center to discuss her goals to start working on her path to purchasing a home.
With proper guidance and hard work, Mariana improved her credit score, built her savings, and got pre-approved for a mortgage.
After months of searching, she finally found a cozy three-bedroom home in a safe neighborhood with great schools. The best part? Her mortgage payment was lower than what she had been paying in rent!
The day she received the keys to her first home was emotional. Her children ran through the house, excited to pick their own rooms. Mariana stood in the doorway, tears in her eyes, knowing that all the sacrifices had been worth it.
Today, Mariana is not just a homeowner—she is a role model for her two sons, showing them that perseverance and hard work can turn dreams into reality. This story reflects the journey of many individuals who, with the right resources and determination, achieve financial empowerment.
