How SERJobs’ Job Readiness Training (JRT) Prepares Members for Career Success

At SERJobs, we know that landing a job takes more than submitting an application. It takes preparation, confidence, and strategy. That’s exactly what our Job Readiness Training (JRT) program is designed to deliver.

The JRT course equips members with the tools, resources, and practical skills needed to effectively seek and secure employment in selected trades and career pathways. Through structured instruction, hands-on practice, and guided reflection, participants build both the technical and interpersonal competencies required to succeed in today’s workforce.

What JRT Covers

The Job Readiness Training program focuses on core employability skills that make candidates competitive and confident, including:

  • Resume development tailored to multiple positions
  • Cover letter creation
  • Strategic job search techniques
  • Marketability and professional branding
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Workplace etiquette and professionalism
  • Interpersonal and transferable skills

Participants engage in both one-on-one and group exercises to practice communication, collaboration, and self-awareness, key attributes employers consistently seek.

By the end of the course, members walk away with:

  • A personalized employment plan
  • A polished resume and cover letter
  • An introduction to digital job boards and professional social media platforms
  • Experience participating in mock interviews
  • A practiced elevator pitch
  • A deeper understanding of confidence, communication, and conflict resolution

This comprehensive approach ensures participants are not just job applicants; they are prepared professionals.

A Real Success Story

The true impact of JRT is best seen in the success of our members. Antonio Jackson recently shared:

“I officially got the job! I truly believe your JRT class made the difference in how I handled the interview. I felt prepared, confident, and ready for their questions thanks to your teaching.”

Moments like these highlight what makes JRT powerful. It’s not just about resumes and interviews; it’s about equipping individuals with the confidence and readiness to step into new opportunities with assurance.

Why It Matters

Confidence changes outcomes. Preparation changes lives.

Through Job Readiness Training, SERJobs is strengthening workforce pathways by ensuring participants are equipped not only with job search tools but with the mindset and professionalism needed for long-term success.

Whether preparing for a first job, transitioning careers, or entering a new industry, JRT serves as a critical bridge between potential and placement.

Come Along – A Day In Job Readiness Training (JRT) Class

9:00 am – 10:30 am: Interview Etiquette

Hosted by Wellness in Houston, Prairie View A&M University

The day began with a session focused on interview etiquette, where participants learned how to present themselves confidently in both virtual and in-person interviews. The class explored the STAR Method: Situation, Task, Action, and Result as a framework for clearly communicating their career stories and highlighting their accomplishments. Participants also discussed ways to strengthen their professional profiles beyond traditional work experience, including volunteering, taking courses, and building new job-related skills. To reinforce these lessons, the class watched interview examples and worked together to identify what candidates did well and where they could improve. By the end of the session, participants felt more confident refining their resumes, strengthening their personal narratives, and preparing their elevator pitches for upcoming mock interviews later in the week.

11:00 am – 12:00 pm: Financial Literacy

Hosted by Truist Bank

The second session of the day focused on financial literacy as an essential component of long-term career success. Participants explored topics such as personal budgeting, calculating disposable income, setting short-term and long-term financial goals, maintaining a strong credit score, and developing SMART goals. This session provided participants with a practical foundation for managing their finances and preparing a personal financial plan as they transition into their next role.

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm: Interview Prep

Led by our JRT instructor, Tylra Lee

During the final focus block, participants put their skills into practice by preparing for mock interviews. Instructor Tylra Lee reviewed homework assignments and invited each participant to present a three-minute elevator pitch to the class. Working in pairs and small groups, participants practiced delivering their pitches while offering feedback and encouragement to one another. The collaborative environment helped build confidence as participants refined their communication skills and prepared for real-world interview scenarios. By the end of the session, the room was filled with renewed confidence and motivation. Under the guidance of Tylra Lee, participants are not only developing the skills needed to secure employment but also expanding their vision for what is possible in their careers. Her passion and dedication help ensure that every participant leaves the classroom feeling supported, encouraged, and ready to pursue new opportunities.

Meet our Job Readiness Training (JRT) Instructor, Tylra Lee

At the heart of SERJobs’ Job Readiness Training program is instructor Tylra Lee, whose approach goes far beyond traditional classroom instruction. While the program equips members with practical job search skills, Tylra helps create an environment that is equally inspiring, empowering, and transformational.

Tylra brings a deeply personal understanding to the classroom. Having faced many of the same challenges that SERJobs members encounter. Including periods of homelessness, unemployment, underemployment, and navigating life as a single mother. Tylra understands firsthand how overwhelming those barriers can feel. Her experiences allow her to connect with participants on a meaningful level and remind them that change is possible.

Tylra encourages members to step outside their comfort zones, think creatively, and confront the barriers that may have held them back. Through guided exercises and open conversations, participants begin to recognize their value and learn how to confidently present their skills and experiences in today’s competitive job market.

Equally important, Tylra builds trust in the classroom, helping members believe in both themselves and the process. Through her leadership and passion, Job Readiness Training becomes more than a class; it becomes a turning point as members move toward employment and long-term stability.
