PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This in-person training opportunity is offered through a partnership with the Houston Pediatric Dental Assistant School.

TRAINING Details

The field specific training takes place at a pediatric dental office, in-person, on Saturdays for 10 weeks. The curriculum is highly hands-on, individualized, and experiential. The program is directed by a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist and, along with the other instructors, they have a combined 40 years’ experience in the field. The final week is a 40-hour externship where participants practice their newly learned skills under supervision at vetted dental offices around the Houston area. Some of the skills learned and developed during the course are:

  • HIPPA/OSHA/Laws/Ethics
  • Medical Terminology
  • Infection Control
  • Dental Assistant Skills and Materials
  • Dental Instruments and Tools
  • Tooth Anatomy and
  • Physiology
  • Dental Charting
  • Preventative Dentistry/Nutrition
  • Radiology
  • Office Procedures
  • Treatment Areas and Accessories
  • Emergency Procedures and CPR

This training is perfect for someone looking to explore a pathway to a sustainable career in dentistry. The specialized curriculum allows graduates to secure a position in a dental office upon passing the exam at $14-15 an hour with projected growth of 14% over the next couple of years. They can go on to earn additional certifications through the State of Texas which allows monitoring of nitrous oxide, polish teeth, and place dental sealants. Graduates can work in both the dental office and hospital as a surgical Pediatric Dental Assistant. The instructors and administrators at the school are committed to developing relationships with the participants and supporting them through school and beyond by helping them get placed in a full-time job after they finish their externships.

    Requirements

    To have a computer, desktop, laptop or tablet with audio and camera, to take virtual classes.
    Have access to Wifi for the virtual training.
    Have basic computer skills.
    To have a valid/current photo ID
    Have a valid social security number a (or alien registration number U.S. student visa, or *Form 1-766 or EAD)
    To have authorization to work in USA.
    Visit the school and tour the campus.
    Provide an up-to-date immunization record.

    Eligibility

    Resident of City of Houston
    Must be 18 or older
    Low to middle income – must show proof of income documents
    Self-certification might be required for unemployed participants.
    No sex offender records.
    Have a High School Diploma or GED
    Have a clean criminal background
    Be able to pass a drug test
